...was initially for pieces done on a computer, but has since become a free-for-all. Here you'll find process work (digital and otherwise), sketch pages and studies, sometimes with commentary.

You can see the rest of my work here.

Ballin'

The guys at work are teaching me to render.  Or, rather, I'm forcing them to.

For the past week or so I've been painting reflective balls into photographs, trying to marry them with their environment.  Not very exciting, I know, but you have to start somewhere.  Thanks to Albert, Sparth, Gabo and John.

"Find The Design" -- Russian Translation

Alexey Samokhin recently translated my "Find The Design" lecture into Russian.

Here's the original
...and the translation.

As was the case with Thumb War, I'm so glad this material can find a wider audience.

lighting practice - Tea God

Here's Alexey Samokhin's beautiful original.  Figured I'd butchered Guiton's work enough.

Sighting!

Tom Scholes [right] and Matt Barett [left] sketching in the wild.  Shhhh, no loud noises!  Artists are more afraid of you than you are of them.

I gained some new insight on feet and hands this weekend.  +10 to dexterity.

brush test / faces

Today I created a couple new sketching/inking brushes based off a dual-line technique I saw Glenn Israel using.  The effect, when zoomed out a bit, is dry-brushy.  My previous workhorse Photoshop brush was the one used to ink the eyeball thing in the upper right...which you can see is much smoother and a lot less punchy.  I'll be needing a bold, black brush to do technical drawing, but something with enough imperfection to keep me interested.

Also, I drew some girls.

Extract!

Today's lesson was learning how to do an extract on a subtool and select different polygroups, for the purpose of hard surface modeling.  This is all Greek to me!

March M.O.D.O.K. Madness

I was informed last night that we've entered into March M.O.D.O.K. Madness so, after getting better acquainted with the fellow, I used him as a continuation of my crash course in Zbrush.  The sculpt itself is rushed, but tonight's major wins were that (1) I learned how to how to add, mirror and merge subtools and (2) how to move, scale and rotate said subtools.  Sean Binder is a sadistic teacher.  A little more punishment from him, and I'll be ready to plunge into the tutorials, where I imagine things will really begin to accelerate.

More Zedbrush

...this time with coaching from my man on the inside, Sean Binder.  He suggested I was jumping to dynamesh too quickly, and that I needed to rough out my shapes better at lower subdivision.  I should have picked Kurt Papstein's brain before I left Cali.  Maybe I can get 343 to import him for a seminar!  You game, Kurt?

Was watching this HP Lovecraft documentary and wanted to make a fish man.  Gonna take him further tomorrow.

Back in Zbrush

I was inspired by a recent, sexy video Pior Oberson posted about raking clay, and decided to apply this technique to my recent tinkerings in zbrush.

Ver. 4R2's dynamesh has emboldened me to experiment.  I had fun using pinch, nudge and slide to create silly variations.

Making. Lines. Feels. So. Good.

...Though I've gotta get away from the whole "squinty-eyed" thing. It's the easy way out.
